Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration observed by 56 Commonwealth member countries spanning Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe. On Wednesday 13th March 2024, with support from The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, TRRS students commemorated Commonwealth Day 2024, guided by the global theme: \u201cOne Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth.\u201d We were pleased to welcome dignitaries from the British High Commission, Rwandan High Commission and Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.<\/p>\n\n\n

Amidst a colourful flags ceremony, our Middle School Choir performed Ghana\u2019s National Anthem, alongside the Commonwealth Anthem, to commence the event. Lower 6 students staged a brilliant simulation of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), with deliberations  centred on combating climate change and the importance of support for vulnerable nations and emerging economies across the Commonwealth. King Charles III and Rt. Hon. Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland KC, welcomed guests and launched CHOGM with  Heads of State from the following countries delivering their speeches with great poise and passion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda \u2013 President Paul Kigame<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sierra Leone \u2013 President Julius Maada<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Kingdom \u2013 Prime Minister Rishi Sunak<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya \u2013 President William Ruto<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria \u2013 President- Bola Ahmed Tinubu<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Africa \u2013 President Cyril Ramphosa<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India \u2013 Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Zealand \u2013 Prime Minister Christopher Luxon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To close our event, Junior School pupils showcased a captivating kpanlogo dance and our three Gold Finalist Medal winners of The Queens Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023 recited their inspiring, award winning entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We applaud our students and their teachers for all their efforts to make this programme a success. TRRS is committed to providing our pupils with opportunities to broaden their knowledge of topical issues affecting the African continent, and developing skills in research and  oracy. Well done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
