Our Form 5 Geography and Physics students embarked on an educational field trip to the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Generating Station on 3 March 2026.
The visit offered an excellent hands-on opportunity for students to understand how water from the Volta River is transformed into electricity and distributed nationwide and fostered a deeper appreciation for Ghana’s engineering accomplishments. Through guided tours and conversations with industry experts, students gained a better understanding of energy conversion, electromagnetic induction, and large-scale power generation, bringing classroom theory to life.
Beyond the technical aspects, students also explored the wider geographical and environmental considerations of damming the Volta River. Discussions highlighted both the benefits and challenges of hydroelectric power, including its contribution to national development, environmental management, and the sustainable mitigation of impacts associated with major infrastructure projects.
The experience underscores TRRS’s commitment to experiential learning, allowing students to connect concepts in Physics and Geography with Ghana’s real-world industrial and environmental context. Engaging directly with one of the nation’s most significant energy assets strengthened their understanding of sustainable resource management while enhancing their critical thinking and analytical skills.
This trip was facilitated by members of the Science and Geography Departments: Mr. David Nyatepe (Geography Coordinator), Mr. Samuel Boateng Adjei (Senior School Physics Teacher), and Ms. Gilsonda Attuquaye (Science Laboratory Technician).
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Management and staff of the Volta River Authority for their warm reception, invaluable support, and expert guidance throughout the tour. Their willingness to share knowledge made this learning experience truly enriching for our students.
At TRRS, we remain committed to providing meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and support our mission to develop well-rounded learners prepared to become impactful global leaders.
