The Roman Ridge School recently held its four-day Sankofa Heritage Programme under the theme “Reclaiming Our Roots: Celebrating Ghanaian History and Culture.” This initiative aimed to enrich students’ appreciation of Ghana’s historical, cultural, and economic heritage through engaging presentations, performances, and creative displays.
The programme began with a vibrant whole-school opening ceremony that featured cultural displays and reflections on the importance of studying African history. Junior School students performed a cultural dance, while speakers from the Social Studies Department encouraged learners to draw inspiration from the past as they shape their future.
The second day focused on Ghana’s Road to Independence, with Middle School students presenting storytelling sessions, skits, and poetry. A highlight of the day was a dramatic reenactment of the Anglo-Ashanti Wars and the courageous resistance led by Yaa Asantewaa, accompanied by traditional war chants and dances that vividly brought the historical moment to life.
On the third day, attention turned to Ghana’s Economic Heritage, as Senior School students explored the history of cocoa and its profound impact on the country’s development. Through presentations, students shared the story of Tetteh Quarshie and staged a dramatic portrayal of the spread of cocoa farming. Spoken word performances and reflections also emphasised the continued importance of agriculture to Ghana’s economy.
The programme concluded with Junior School Heritage Day, during which pupils proudly showcased colourful local dress, traditional songs, poetry, cultural quotes, games, and a lively fashion show. Their history projects and artworks were also displayed, highlighting their creativity and research efforts.
The Sankofa Heritage Programme reaffirmed TRRS’s commitment to fostering cultural pride, historical awareness, and a deeper appreciation of Ghana’s rich heritage. Through immersive, student-led activities, learners were encouraged to reconnect with their roots while building confidence, curiosity, and a strong sense of global citizenship.
