On 8 September 2026, The Roman Ridge School (TRRS) celebrated International Literacy Day under the global theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet, and Prosperity.” The programme highlighted how strong literacy and communication skills empower individuals to drive shared progress and protect our global home.
The morning event was expertly guided by student MCs from Lower 6: Angel Smith and Aislyn Owusu Bempah. Following an opening prayer by Olivia Nsonamoah of Class 2 West and the School Hymn led by Mrs. Abenaa Asare (PSHE Co-ordinator), Ms. Gloria Ofori-Atta (Junior School English Coordinator) delivered a powerful Keynote Address.
TRRS students took centre stage to showcase their command of language and artistic expression. Lael Fiadzigbey of Class 3 Atifi and Ridhwan Asamoah Boateng of Form 1 Atifi shared the historical background of Literacy Day. Captivating performances followed, including a moving spoken word piece by Zaima Aribah of Form 3 West, a thoughtful reading by Tierra Aneja of Class 4 Atifi, and an expressive poetry recital by Inaayah Ponle-Haizel of Form 2 West. The assembly concluded with a spirited rendition of the TRRS School Anthem, proudly led by Class 1.
The celebration continued throughout the week with section assemblies, the TRRS Literacy Cup inter-house competitions (Spelling Bees, Riddles, and Word Trivia), and a school-wide Book Drive launched by the Class of 2027 for their Graduation Service Project, embodying our theme for 2026/2027, “Be the Reason Someone Smiles.” This initiative invites the TRRS community to donate books, bringing joy and the gift of reading to others.
These activities perfectly reinforced our pillars of leadership, responsibility, and excellence. Congratulations to all performers, organisers, and our Student Leaders for an impactful week in celebration of literacy!
